Trapping Dmax null

When I run a dmax expression in VBA,
if there is no matching data, then i get an error message further down the code as the returned value was null.

I can get round this by ensuring there is always a dummy value in the main table, but I would rather set up some code to avoid that particular headache.

Any ideas?
