Transferring DNS/DHCP from Netware 6.5 to Win Server 2003

I've had our DNS and DHCP running on Netware 6.5 for some time now. Lately our NW server has had some issues, and I'd like to change our DNS/DHCP over to our Win 2003 server so we don't lose access to our other network servers and to the internet.

We have an internet gateway server, which is where the DNS should point, and then the PC local clients are set to DNS on our outside internet service provider.

What do I need to do to get DNS and DHCP running on Win Server 2003 and not running on NW 6.5 so I can make this transition?

Talks about doing a zone transfer, also maybe some other things you need to look at as you are unclear if you are depracating Novell or just want to use Microsoft for those services now.

We've recently had two situations where the Netware server went down, and because it's our Primary DNS server and DHCP none of our staff could access the Linux and Windows servers we have on our network. I'd like to get Netware either completely our of the DNS/DHCP picture or have it at least be the secondary, so that if it goes down again the staff remains connected to our internet gateway appliance and the Linux and Windows servers.

What would be the best way to do this?

Well, you could treat this several ways. You can load DNS server on the Windows server and do a zone transfer as mentioned in the link. After the zone transfers, make the Windows box the primary and then the Novel box the secondary (should be info online on how to accomplish these tasks if not already laid out in the link I provided). Or you could take Novell completely out of the picture in regards to DNS and have two Windows servers do Active Directory integrated DNS (this way DNS is redundant and updated via AD). If you have windows clients, I'm surprised you don't have this or need this already.

In regards to DHCP, that one's a little easier as again, it's just DHCP... One thing you need to do is keep in mind that you probably will have to create a special option or two to hand out SLP information to your clients for Novell communication. Novell's DHCP already has these options built in and defined, but Microsoft does not and have to be created and defined.
