All,

One of my users wanted to install XP-Pro on his home machine which had a copy of Windows ME installed. He ran the xfer wizzard on the PC, then upgraded to XP Pro. After upgrading to Pro he ran the xfer wizzard to restore his files, this worked good, but for some reason he felt the need to restore his machine to factory default and upgrade to XP Pro again. When he tries to run the xfer on the same folder he ran before, he gets an error that there are no backedup files in that location. The files are on a ext HD, and I have verified that they are there (3gb). Any help is appreciated.

There were recent updates involving the Transfer Wizard, which resulted in the new one not handling files created by the old Wizard and vice versa.

Which ever version created his files and settings must be used to transfer them.

Some additional thoughts:

. When you are using FSTW, review the Fastwiz.log log file. Look for errors towards the end of the log that may indicate the reason for the failure. In Windows XP, the Fastwiz.log log file is located in the c:\Documents and Settings\user name\Local Settings\Application Data folder.

. Be sure the recovery steps are as follows:
On your new PC, open up "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard" and Click "Next", make sure "New Computer" is checked in the list and then select "Next."

Then mark the one that says " I want to create a wizard disk in the following drive" and then select a drive such as a jump drive or a floppy or whatever media you have that you can use on your old PC, and then select "Next."

A little box will pop up asking which version of windows is on your old pc, select whatever it is and hit "OK"

It will then prompt you to enter whatever blank media you chose (I used a 1GB jump drive) and then hit "OK"

It will save a couple files to the blank media you chose, and it will then prompt you to take that media to your old PC while leaving the current "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard" program open on your new one.

Now take your media to the old pc and open it so that you can see the files that are on there, double click the file called "FASTWiz" and another "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard" will open.

This time use it like you normally would; selecting "Old PC" and then instead of running the wizard again this time select where you want it to save the gathered information off your old PC, I chose my jump drive.

Once it's done collecting and saving the info. take the media you save to back to your new PC, insert it, and on the already open "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard" program click "Next" and it will prompt you for the location of the collected files, show it where to go and it will do the rest. The actual file won't be displayed so just point it to the folder or drive where it is.

Linney:

Are you sure you are discussing FAST and not USMT in terms of an upgrade/file compatability issue in your note above?

I base it on the optional update.

You cannot transfer files and settings from a computer that is running a 32-bit edition of Windows XP to a computer that is running Windows XP Professional x64 Edition

"The Files and Settings Transfer Wizard included in Windows XP SP2 does not support gathering data from a 32-bit Windows XP environment and applying it in a 64-bit Windows XP environment. Install this update to enable support for collecting data in a 32-bit Windows XP environment and applying it to a 64-bit Windows XP environment. For information about how to install this update, visit the following Microsoft Web site:"

Whether you have a 64 bit System or not if this update is installed you may have to use the F.A.S.T. Wizard from the original CD to get USMT files created by that earlier version of F.A.S.T. Wizard.

"Your migration store was created with a previous version of File and Settings Transfer Wizard. Please collect your settings using the current version of the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. It is available on the Windows XP x64 edition CD under Perform Additional Tasks. You can also create a wizard disk by running the wizard on your Windows XP x64 Edition computer."

The reverse "fix" is true if you run the older version, or to state it more clearly, what created it must used to transfer it.
