I have a temporary networker server with temporary licenses that I am using during the transition to a new tape library. Specs are as follows:

Temporary Server
----------------
Sun Ultra E450
Solaris 9
Networker 7.13 (temp licenses)
Quantum PX720 with 4 SDLT600 drives

Permanent Server
----------------
Sun Ultra E450
Solaris 8 (will be 9 prior to transition)
Networker 7.12 (will be 7.13 prior to transition)
ATL P3000 with 8 DLT7000s (is going away very soon now)

Once I have enough retention built up on the temporary server, I plan to decommission my P3000, upgrade my permanent server to Solaris 9, and install Networker 7.13. I plan to use my existing licenses for the permanent server.

Once the permanent server has Solaris 9 installed and configured, I plan to halt operations on the temporary server, disconnect the PX720, and move it over to my permanent server. Once configured properly, I will install networker 7.13. I'd like to transfer all my existing resources (clients, groups, schedules, indeces and database, etc) over to my permanent server from the temporary server.

I have an idea of the procedure, but could definitely use some advice. Will there be host id issues with regards to licensing, since the resources come from a server with a different host id? What steps should I follow and are there any major "gotchas" to watch out for?

Thanks,

take a look to the "disaster recovery guide" from legato documentation. Actually what you are doing is a disaster recovery.

Basically, you need to recover the bootstrap, so before to make the move, backup somthing from your current server in order to backup the bootstarp and write down (in paper) the save set ID. Then, install NW in the new server, and make a "bootstrap recovery", you will get all configurations back plus the media index. After the media index is ok, run "nsck -L7" in order to recreate all client index.

Again, this procedure is clearly described in the DR guide from legato.

Cheers.

If you use the same hostname, there should not be any problems except for licensing. On an authorized system the host ID changes and you must apply for a host transfer (get new auth-codes) for your license.

However, if you still have not registered your server, you don't even need to do that.

Thanks for the input so far guys.

I guess I should clarify the naming situation a bit more...

Permanent server is currently running in parallel with the temporary server. I plan to rebuild permanent server (keeping same name)then transfer resources from temporary server to permanent server. Permanent server is currently authorized with my real licenses. Temporary server (different name) is running on temp licenses from Legato.

Hope that clears things up.

Thanks again.
