transaction log running even though in Simple mode

Of course they are utilized, it could not happen otherwise. They just are continually writing over themselves when they can. basically it uses a small amount because truncate log on checkpoint is set to true. the amount between checkpoints can vary. If you have it set to simple, then do not worry about it.
