I hope someone can help i installed windows xp on an old machine on a 6gb hd.now i have a new machine 1700gz proccesor 20 gbyte hard drive +60gbyte hard drive is there a way to transfer my registered windows xp to the new machine ...........hope you can help

If you are removing it from the old machine and putting it on the new machine you just reactivate it.This can be done through a toll free phone call.

I read somewhere that when you register your XP your system configuration is analized and logged, so when you try to register again a further analysis takes place and if too many changes are detected in the configuration, registration is refused.
I think you are allowed several changes in your system to allow for basic upgrades but only to a point!
Maybe someone can be a little more specific about these details or infact comment on weather this is true or not?

Paparazi is absolutely right! Only a few changes to the hardware configuration can be made without having to reactivate the product. I've read that you can upgrade as many as 4 components as long as the NIC card and motherboard are not part of that equation.

In your case, they are and you'll need to contact Microsoft directly to receive a new activation code. Once activated, the copy of XP you own will then be tied to the new pc.

Thanks for the help everybody however i've now sold the system complete with xp
and boutht a new one .....................problem solved .......Cheers

Even thought this thread is technically finished,
I will just ad my 5cents worth.

I have reinstalled XP Pro on a clients computer about 3 weeks ago.

He had been running a new computer since Nov 2001 with his XP Pro, all activated, of course. 3 weeks ago, I built him a NEW computer, all except the CD-ROMS, and video card,
and NIC.
I mean, new mainboard, new processor, DDR RAM instead of SDRAM, new hard drive (now 3 instead of 1), so this machine was a NEW computer.
OH, I did also change his DVD player to one that had a SP/DIF digital output...... so that was even changed.

I told him, when you get home and reactivate this - NEW install, because I naturally wiped the hard drive and reinstalled, that he would fail the activation and would have to call MS and tell them his tale, and they would just re-activate him. No problems.

> Well, ......... he called, and they said (loose quote),
"Sir, what are you talking about ? Just plug in your 25-digit Product ID, and go. No problems."
Well, I had already done that while installing!!! He activated it, NO PROBLEMS. I was astounded. I mean, what was the point, he had just gotten a new computer ???

> Next couple of days, I went to a client's office, and he had TOTALLY toasted his Windows XP Pro - it was impossible to fix.
I wiped the HD clean, and reinstalled, ON THE EXACT same machine,,,,,,,,, NO CHANGES WHATSOEVER.
*** ACTIVATION FAILED ***
I was again, Astounded. I called an got it straightened out.
(seems that the copy had been put on 1 machine 1st, then this one before I got to it).
However, it was running....... and I make zero changes.

So, my perception of this is: I'm confused. (G)
So is Microsoft.

And I thought this was just an issue for XP Home Edition, and that the pro version was not bound by the same configuration contraints? Martin Just trying to help, sometimes falling short, I am only human after all.
