track components for custom built systems

I was wondering if anyone uses a database to track computers they build for customers? I have a client who wishes us to build some PCs and we want to track exactly what is in each, warranty for each component, etc. We are not looking for anything expensive.. any ideas??

I use Q&A. Old dos version flat file, but it still tracks the parts on those machines I am still responsible for.

Access would be an acceptable DB but there might be a learning curve.

Data entry is a pain, and printing of the details can be the pits.

I export all my data to ascii, comma delimited, and use basic to do the printing. I have more control that way. Ed Fair

Freeware (for personal use) exists which will inventory both the hardware and software.
It is: Belarc Advisor, available from

I do not know the pricing structure for corporate use, but the URL should lead you in the right direction.

Sounds like you will not use network ability; pop a floppy in the unit, and it will list for you all hardware and software.
