I have track changes turned on and want my deleted text to display with a strikethrough effect and not in ballons. I tried this from the microsoft knowledge base but it didn't work. Any ideas?

SYMPTOMS
If you edit a document by using the Track Changes feature in Microsoft Word 2002, the text that you delete or change does not appear with strikethrough formatting.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, edit the registry and delete the key that contains the settings for Track Changes. The next time that you start Word, Word generates a new key that contains the default settings for the Track Changes feature.

To delete this key from the registry, follow these steps.

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

Quit all Microsoft Office programs, including the Office Toolbar.
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
In the Registry Editor, locate the following subkey:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word\Data

Right-click the Data key, click Delete, and then click Yes to confirm the deletion.
On the File menu, click Exit to quit the Registry Editor.

I don't use 2002, but I have no doubt that it is a setting rather than a problem with the registry. I thought that if you were to go into track changes and select the additional options button, that some balloon setting may be choosen instead of the strikethrough option. So with this in mind, I did a quick search of the internet to see what I could find. This addy seems to have everything you need - exactly what you are dealing with:

I would think it was an option, but I don't see it in this version of word. I do know how to turn the balloons off, but can't seem to get the strikethrough to represent deleted text.

Try Tools / Options and on the Track Changes tab, do nothing but deselect "Use Balloons...". It should remove the balloons and use strike-throughs.

I did that and it didn't work, that is when I went to the knowledge base and found that article.

That's odd - I started a new document, saved it, opened it and enabled track changes. It made balloons as I made changes. Then I changed the option and the baloons went away, replaced by strike-throughs.

Try a new test document??

In Word 2000, there is a "track changes" menu item on the tool menu. *Not the one that is found under options*

When you select that item, as you know, there is the option to track changes, but there are several diffent settings when tracking. You can have the items highlighted on screen or just on the printed page, or not showing on either. Maybe this is where you should look next.

When you go to this tab, you can get all the options from the tool/options/track changes menu by using the option button.
