Touchpad pointer problem

I have a new acer laptop and using the touchpad if I hold the pointer over a link on a website for more than a few seconds that link opens without me even tapping the touchpad. Is there a way to disable this? Not sure if it's Vista related or hardware related. Thanks.

Sounds like it's one of two settings for your touch pad. There is likely a program installed on your computer for controlling the touch-pad settings.

When you say "hold the pointer over a link.." do you mean your finger is staying in one spot on the touch pad, or you put the pointer there, and then remove your finger.

If that is case, it could be the sensitivity setting is set too high for your liking.

Also, it seems like I have seen a setting in most Synaptics touchpad applications that say something about automatically opening an item if the cursor is left there... but I can't remember for sure.

If there is no touchpad/Synaptics in the task tray (where your clock is located), then try going to the Control Panel, and then looking under hardware - mouse..

My finger is no longer on the the touchpad when it goes to the link that the pointer is on.

Definitely sounds to me like a setting you say where it automatically opens an item if the cursor is left there. I did look though all the settings for the touch pad through the icon in my tray, but none of them sounded like that kind of setting to me. I also looked at the mouse settings, but there was nothing there either. I'll have a look again tonight at the touchpad settings. Maybe I can post the options here and something will jump out at you.

Also, try posting the specific laptop model you have, and the name of the hardware/software for your touchpad if possible.

I'll have to try and look at my Toshiba running Vista, and see if I can find a see a setting. I just know I've seen such a setting!
