Hi

I have a Toshiba Tecra M1 that is having problems finding and installing a "Network Controller".

I have the usual yellow exclamation mark/point in Device Manager.

XP Pro tries to install the drivers each time the machine boots. I don't have a driver disk and can't find the relevant drivers on the Toshiba web site.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks very much for your help.

Glen

You can have a look at the largest chip on your controller and do a google for it. That will usually do the job.
For instance, a realtek nic card will have something like:
RTL8139, im going by memory here, but something like that.

If you cant find the drivers that way just post the markings on the largest chip on that nic card and someone here will point you in the right direction.
There are not that many chipsets for nics anyway so should be easy to find.

One other thing. For large companies like Toshiba and others, HP for instance, heres a trick for you.
If the US website doenst have the drivers you want, go to a foreign site, preferrably a language you understand, but there are other sites that do english. Anyway, a lot of times i have found drivers over on European sites where they were missing from the US sites. Its because US and a few other countries lead the way as far as technology and others lag behind, so these sites tend to keep older drivers longer. Another good site is the South American sites, i have found drivers there too that werent at the US site!
Umax scanner was a good example. There were charging something like $10 for drivers for win xp for certain astra umax scanners and i found the same drivers on their own European site for free!! So i used google to find forums where people were asking for these drivers and i pointed them to the European site. The net is so great!!

Hi

Thanks for the advice. Howerver I don't think this problem is with the NIC card. The NIC is installed, showing OK in Device Manager and is working when I use it.

I could be wrong and the problem is still NIC based but i thought it might be to do with WiFi or something.

Thanks

Glen

If you are having problems installing it - how is it "installed, showing OK"?

Is it possible you have an "onboard" controller, AND a card?

That was my understanding of what he was trying to tell us, that his nic card wasnt working and wasnt installed or wasnt installed properly.
thats why i asked what the chipset was, then you can find the drivers based on that.
Built in or pci, its all the same for installing drivers.

That's why I asked if there were two of them - conflicts?

To micker377, yes, i can see where you can be led to believe that. I think its only the one, though.

I do believe that glenross21 needs to find the drivers for this probably built-in network device. He mentioned he couldnt find drivers so i suggested he look at other Toshiba websites and also to get the name of the chipset as i believe drivers can be had by this method. It would be better to get them from Toshiba but it may be they can be found in places like windriver.com and other similar places that specialize in having drivers listed for download.

Hi all

Sorry for any confusion.

The NIC card is installed and working fine i.e. I can connect to a network using it and in Device Manager-Network Adapters it shows up fine with no Yellow Exclamation mark/point.

However there is a Yellow Exclamation mark/point next to what the notebook is calling a "Network Controller"

I hope this is a little clearer.

Cheers

Glen

Is the NIC a plug-in PMCIA card? Is there a network socket on the back (or side) of the laptop? If so, look in BIOS set-up to see if you can disable the onboard networking. If there is only the NIC that you put in, the computer may be talking about a conflict in "Network Neighborhood". It may be looking for a "Workgroup" that no longer exists.

From PC Worlds "Product review":

<.....Gigabit Ethernet, and three wireless choices: Atheros 802.11a/b, Cisco 802.11b, and Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 802.11b (Centrino). A hardware slider switch on the chassis controls wireless operations.>

This brings a question of why you need a seperate NIC card. Everything you need is built in! The conflict (yellow mark), could be from the "slider switch".

Hi

The NIC is built into the notebook and has an RJ45 socket on the case. It came built in and isn't "plugged in" - attached or a PCMCIA card.

I know the notebook has wireless capability as well as a standard NIC and I also though this might be the issue but this brings me back to the original question, how can I find out what the hardware trying to be installed is and what drivers it requires....???

Thanks again.

Glen

thats what i told him to do, go to toshiba website and get drivers, guess he didnt know which ones.

garebo:
Have you tried to "read" the Toshiba website? What a mess! You have to go through the "Products" page - tech assistant - find computers - find the computer you want info on (the search function doesn't recognize laptops) - go through a couple more pages to find manuals and info! No wonder he "ignored" you, I'm used to this and still had problems. That's why I posted the page he needs.

You mean like pc chips and ECS?

I didnt realize that, no wonder!
Good thing you had the time to help out, micker377!

Ah you're a bunch of good egg so you are.....

Thanks for all the assistance.

I downloaded this driver:

Title: Toshiba Wireless LAN Drivers (Agere, Atheros, Cisco, Intel) for Windows XP/2000

Size: 2,015,232 bytes
Posted: 03/12/03
Released Date: 03/10/03
Operating System: Windows XP, Windows 2000

And all is now well.

Thanks again
Glen
