I recently purchased this old 486 notebook so that I can use MSWord when I'm not at home. However they removed Win98 from it and the only operating system in it is DOS. The notebook has a floppy drive but no cd-rom. Is there a way that I can connect the notebook to my desktop PC(which is running WIN98) and transfer the Win98 installation files so that I can install windows in the notebook? What software do I need? Can I use a parallel port direct connection?

I have a copy of LapLink Pro for DOS that works great for transferring files between 2 computers using a serial cable. Has a remote install feature you can use to install LapLink to your laptop and then pull the Windows installation files from your desktop. It's only 216kb so if you'd like to have a copy let me know, and I'll email it along to you.

That sounds great. My e-mail address is usmc0311eau@hotmail.com. Thank-you.

Kerrikk,
I am working with a different laptop now that only has a 170MB hard-drive! Can I use this version of LapLink to remote install Win98 from a desktop onto the laptop?

If so, could you please send me a copy of LapLink again. I seem to have misplaced the disk I had downloaded it to!

Thank-you!

You will probably find that the cable is not a serial one. Laplink in all versions that I have worked with used a special cable. Will try to find the documentation and let you know what is required.
You can use interlnk, which is built into 6.22 and maybe lower to do the same thing.
You could also get a program "fdread" that would allow you to store the install files onto floppy and transfer to the notebook also running "fdread".
But whatever you use to transfer the files from above is not remote install.
There was a network using serial or parallel connections that would allow either to be the transfer medium. Called "lantasticz" but has been out of the supply chain for 3 to 4 years.
Better choice would be to use a parallel port zip drive. Could transfer onto the zip drive from desktop, then install from the zip drive to the laptop. But there is one slight problem. Depending on 98 version , you run out of space on the zip. 95B or C will fit on a zip drive.
As far a installing on 170 mb drive, any change you make in the system will force you to remake the network, as 170 isn't big enough to hold the install files and OS. Try 95 upgrade, it will hold both and give you a little room for programs.

Ed Fair
