Hi!..I use a TOSHIBA SATELLITE 5005-S504....I also have installed the latest Norton Anti-virus..but everytime I want to run a Full scan..but it the laptop gets shut down automatically when it reaches the C drive in TEmp directory...So when i tried to run an Virus scan on that directory ..it shows no virus found!..

Pliz help me..1.why does my system go off automatically?
2.Is there any way that i can stop it?

I have not had this problem before, but maybe go to MSCONFIG and disable fast shutdown. If its already checkmarked try taking off the check mark.

Second, I have heard problems with Norton Anti-virus. Sometimes you can't boot up except in Safe Mode. Maybe its accessing a file that is being shared by another program. Try, perhaps, releasing (if any are located) any Norton utilities that are running in the background.

This is just a guess and I hope it works.

BTW, to get into MSCONFIG:

Click Start
Click Run
Type msconfig
Press OK
Click Advanced, check or uncheck Disable Fast Shutdown

I really hope this helps despite doubts.

...or you have a virus. When Norton detects it and tries to nullify it, the virus is holding all OS file handles (which is what happens when it is a boot virus) and when Norton pulls the execution plug the OS has no file handles available and the system therefore crashes.

Is it an ordered shutdown - in other words, the 'Windows shutting down' screen appears? Or is it a crash, where the laptop just shuts down instantly (which the power system does automatically when the OS massively crashes - no CPU or system activity so the power controller figures you shut the unit down completely).
