tnt2 win98 driver win98se nvidia trouble black screen

Okay, I'm resorting to help.

Computer: 233Intel/tnt2Video/128M Ram

I replaced Everything! Really, and I have the same darn problem. I install the driver for the video card, system reboots normally, then it hangs at a black screen. I've tried many different drivers, (nvidia.com/creative.com). Reinstalled win98 3 times. Replaced:

Motherboard: From no-name to TYAN 1590
Mem: From 128x1 to 32x2
CPU: Intel to Intel 233
Power Supply:
Video Card: From AGP TNT2 Ultra 2(orig) to TNT M64 PCI
NetCard: From Non to 3c509 pnp to intel 82595
CDROM: Cheap one to good one.. And none at all.
Sound card was removed.
Modem was removed.

I just don't get it. I'm supposed to be good at this. The computer I am typing on has a GEforce, it works fine. It used to have a tnt2, then a tnt1 it worked fine.

I did a windows update, different driver versions, Kicked it hard.

I didnt' change the harddrive, but I fdisk /mbr'd it and formatted 3 times. I removed the floppy disk, same stuff. Any suggestions?

What chipset used on mainboards that you try?

I have some problems of this kind with VIA693 chipset mainboards with TNT2/TNT2 Vanta.

Did you install the latest drivers for mainboard? Any of my advices based on the my understanding of facts you supply.

Let me see if I have a grip on what u got:

It works fine with 'standard VGA' ( no drivers ) then when u install the drivers, it reboots to a black screen?

If thats whats happening, is the monitor able to run at the settings you spec when u installed the drivers? try 640 with 16 color, adapter default refresh or 60Hz, just to make sure that the card and monitor work at base settings.

Here's something I've done (boot to the head) - used ISA or AGP drivers with PCI or any combo thereof. Also, check the card for the final seller's name, or use the FCC id @

http://www.fcc.gov/oet/fccid/

to get the maker. Some makers release diff versions of cards for OEM and full retail, and the drivers can be diff too.

It's not a refresh problem, as the computer is frozen.

It's a VIA 598-586 chipset number.. I'll try the motherboard drivers.. Both motherboards have that chipset! I am seeing the light...

I'm not crazy.... ( I hope )
