can any one tell me what could possibily wrong here I can ping the server but I dont have any response when I use tnsping uitility

Make sure your hostname of the machine match with the listener/tnsnames.ora files.

I did check every thing before posting and I will tell you what I check may be I am missing something I checked the name and the port ,and I did copy these files as precaution from another machine working with tnsping utility but it still not working with my machine .Thanks for the effort

What is the error message you get? Are you pinging the SID or the alias name? Is the listener turned on? Is the database up? What version of Oracle are you pinging? Are you using tnsping80 or tnsping?

Thank you for the response the problem is solved it appears the tnsname.ora file is not updated with newer version but however it is funny thing I got I can tnsping the servername from diffrent machine has the same file it is succeding but when it come to my machine it did not and also what is the diffrens here when you tnsping the server name or SID?

Thank you

The tnsping is looking for the alias named in your tnsname.ora file - what good is a tnsping if every database on every server you have has SID=ORCL? The TNSNAMES file alias incorporates the port, the SID , and the host to uniquely id each db on your network. By default the port and sid may be the same on every machine but the hostname has to be unique.
