Netware 5.0 SP6A

Ever since this server became a single server, the time is always behind. I tried reinstalling SP6A and changing the battery. I read about NTP but I don't quite understand how that works. I understand that the time is probably based on the CMOS clock but why is the CMOS clock wrong? I do not have internet connection on this server.

Haha- The cmos clock is always wrong!! Every computer ever built from the beginning of time has been wrong!! In order to get correct time you need to use timesync.

At you can find a list of time servers. Novell has a "How to" which says:
1. Select an NTP-server that is in your timezone.
2. On the NetWare console, type load monitor.
3. Go to server parameters, Time.

4. Change the settings to values similar to these (add your own IP):
TIMESYNC Synchronization Radius 2000
TIMESYNC Time Adjustment None scheduled.
TIMESYNC Time Sources x.x.x.x:123;
TIMESYNC Type SINGLE
Default Time Server Type PRIMARY
5. When changed give a timesync restart flag and it should work fine.

Hope this helps.

Ok, forgive me if I'm asking stupid questions. I did what you said and now I'm getting this error:

Unable to communicate with server 128.118.46.3:123

Hi,

Is the serevr behind a firewall? If so you need to open port 123. Also, can you ping that address from the server? Try another time source.

Lou

OK, I had timesync set to one of NT workstations on the same network and it seemed to work for a while then all of the sudden it stopped working. I can ping the address from Netware. I set the setting as Jontmke said above. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Sometimes you have to force timesync to reset:

SET TIMESYNC RESTART FLAG=ON

Or even unload and reload timesync -- note, i've seen this abend servers in certain situations so be careful.

It's wierd because sometimes even though you ping successfully, you can't always get the time to synch. so the restart, or the unload/reload, or even a reboot will then sometimes do the trick.

I tried to force timesync to reset and reloaded timesync but didn't work. Any other suggestions?

The IP Address 128.118.46.3, where does it point to? Internal to your company or an external time source - I'm not a hacker by the way ;)

I'm actually using an internal ip address to my desktop PC.

It wont work to sync to your PC unless you have a program on there that serves as an NTP server.

But it doesn't make a lot of sense to do it that way anyway. Try using a source out on the Internet. Use this TID, it has some IP addresses you can use:

Well, how is that going to work? You need to point to a "time server". It is a service running on a server.
Go here and find a time server close to your location and use that. You might have to let this thru the firewall.
