I've seen some sorts of open air "test benches" on Tom's Hardware, and possibly other places that they used for testing new Mobos, etc.

In short, I have found at least one so far that is pre-built, or you can buy as a kit, for the sort of setup I'm looking for. I won't be able to get one anytime real soon, b/c I can't spare any extra finances whatsoever for a while anyway.

Here is one places that has some:

Does anyone have any personal experiences with using anything of this sort?

Thanks for any thoughts/advice.

Of course you could just make your own. If I were going down the root of making my own work bench then I would start looking at perspex sheeting, extended motherboard mounts (screwnut standoffs) and somewhere to place the psu.

You should even be able to make the perspex EATX\ATX\BTX compatible if you can find some templates that way you aren't just limiting it to an ATX based workbench.

You can knock something up and it would be far cheaper and more satisfying doing that then paying someone else to do it for you.

The real world is not about exam scores, it's about ability.

Or even easier and cheaper, chop down and modify a case as the basis of the rig.

I do like both of those ideas.

On the cost and time side of things, I probably would rather just go with an old case, and just whack off what I don't need, basically. ;0)

If I didn't already trash it, I have one case that has a removable mobo tray, but the rest of it is really rubbish. Now to remember whether I tossed the thing... [ponder]

At least the using an old computer case method would be somewhere to start, and then perhaps I could try the idea of using perspex sheeting after I've done it once with just stuff I already have, so I'll have some experience to go on and possibly make one better.

Well, it's all interesting food for thought. Perhaps I'll get the time later to actually carry out one of the thoughts. [smile]

To be honest, there are so many hardware variations that we had to make several running rigs to cover all the options.
We have a socket 775 based setup/ socket 478 socket AM2 and 939 and have only recently dismantled the old Socket A rig.
They are based on old cut down cases, removable motherboard backplates etc wall mounted LCD monitors. Still....most repairs are carried out without the use of any rig in the customers case often with the use of a Sharkoon multi hard drive reader.

I just took an old ply wood board (2mm thick) screwed in the standoffs, took a PSU apart drilled a few holes and screwed down, same for HDD bracket and CDROM, drilled two holes to mount on the wall... works for me...

and I agree with paparazi, I've only used it twice in three years to test something, all testing and such is done on the customer WS...

How to ask a question, when posting them to a professional forum.

paparazi, when you said Sharkoon multi hard drive reader, did you mean this or something else?

Hmm, so it would seem that the building of such would not be as much a necessity as it would just be something on a want to basis. So it's a good thing I'm in no hurry. ;p
