This application has failed ...application configuration is incorrect

A client told me that when she tries to launch my VFP8 app, it stops and says:

"This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect.
Reinstalling the application may fix this problem."

This application has been running for a year or two without any trouble loading. Now, it has stopped loading on 3 computers on her network. Somehow one computer still loads it.

I had her re-install the VFP8 runtime, and it still does not load.

There are some references to that exact message here and there on the net, but none seem to have anything to do with VFP. Some links mention a Microsoft XML library, while others mention XP controls, which could be a better match, but none offer a solution.

Has anyone seen this? I'm guessing a Windows or other automatic update may have triggered it.

A 4 computer network, 3 of 4 fail to run the app? Are all 4 running the same OS? Have you applied SP1 to VFP8? Perhaps 3 of the computers are finding non VFP8 SP1 runtimes.

Regards,

Mike

Also, that message doesn't sound like an OS or VFP one. Rather it sounds as if the Application itself is doing some integrity checking and it's complaining. I'd check for required files. Not only whether they exist, but whether they've had and security access settings changed or are marked Read-Only or System.

Rick,

It does appear to be a legitimate OS exception...

Craig,
Thanks, I stand corrected! (Just when you think you've seen "all" the system error messages. :))

I saw the official Microsoft Error list too, but there doesn't seem to be any cause or solution information.

Yes, they are not all on the same OS, as far as I know the failing systems are XP systems and they all have VFP the same VFP8 SP1 runtime files.

The odd thing is all of them worked fine and when I asked if they knew of any new program installations, they said there were none. But, as you know people have a tendency to forget or not notice new or updated software.
