I am going to but a digital doc 5 and it comes with 2 "flat" probes and 6 "bulb" probes, i want to put the flat ones on the processor and the video card, and i am wondering the best place to put them, i already asked the quesiotn that if i were to put it between the sink and the chip and u all said no to that idea so i am wondering if i could mount these sensors behind the chip on the video card, and behind the CPU (like on the other side of the board) and would it still give good readings and all that jaz.

Thanks,

Matt

Which chip is it for?? On my board I have heat sensors. Abit has decided the best place for one is under the zif (zero insertion force) socket of my AMD chip. So the underside is probably the best place to get a near perfect reading. (if it's a zif socket chip)

You don't under any circumstances want to place the flat probe between the Heatsink and the cpu die or IHS(integrated heat spreader) The Heatsink will not seat properly and you can risk ruining your cpu, especially if its an AMD.

If you have a P4 with an IHS you can try to wedge the flat probe under the IHS.

Most people with AMD's just place the probe as close to the cpu die as possible...In fact you can butt it to the die for decent temp measurements.

Another more radical method is drill a tiny and I reiterate tiny hole in the heatsink itself, then get it close to the die area and cement the hole with Arctic Silver adhesive.

Good luck with whatever method you chose.

i was talking about on the other side of the mobo or pc board, whatever...like on the OPOSITE side of the chip put the probe there, would that work?

thanks

Matt
