Couple of questions. Are you logging on as LOCAL ADMINISTRATOR? Also how much RAM does the system have? Are there a lot of services running? James Collins

Also is NetBEUI loaded? This may be causing the issue as well. It could be a NetBIOS naming issue also. Is the computer name unique? James Collins

I have tried with and without NetBeui installed and with and without NetBeui installed but not checked. NetBeui is currently installed but not checked.
This is definately the only computer with this name.
Renaming the computer will regenerate new netBIOS listings in your WINS databases. Give it a try...you might be surprised with the results. WINS corrupts pretty easily.
You can try releasing/refreshing by issuing a nbtstat -RR at the command prompt, but renaming the computer always solves this error for me.
It's up to you, and easy to do.

I went to every computer and no Computer was named with the old name or the new one. The new one works and I suspect that if I now go back and rename it to the old one it will also work because I know it was unique. Must have been corruption as you suggest.
Thank you very much. I have another problem.
The system does not go into standby or into Hybernate. I have tried everything that I know including suggestions made by Microsoft. It simply freezes after I try.
It is a Dell 733 with the latest BIOS. Should I start a separate thread for this?
Well - i'd start a new thread, but first check with Dell for support on the ACPI feature in your BIOS, then do these things:
To put your computer into hibernation:
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click the Power Options icon.
Click the Hibernate tab. If the Hibernate tab is not available, your computer does not support this feature.
Select the Enable hibernate support check box. If you want to specify a time for automatic hibernation, click a time in Switch to hibernation. Otherwise, leave this blank.
Click Apply.
To put your computer on standby:
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click the Power Options icon.
Click the Advanced tab.
Under the When I press the power button on my computer area, click Standby. If you are using a portable computer, click Standby under the When I close the lid of my portable computer area.
Click OK or Apply, and then turn off the power or close the lid of your portable computer.
If those don't work - it's probably a software app that isn't shutting down properly. Try entering regedit and go to HLKM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\RUN and disable any non-windows startup apps and try again.
