text only in Rich Text Box?

I have code that wasn't written by me. It prints reports via a Rich Text Box. All the dates used are dimmed as strings. I was just wondering why they would do this? Does a rich Text box only deal with text?

The rich text box works like the Word Pad Software that microsoft provides. It has more functionaliyy than the textbox.

However the following code will happily print the date into the rich text box.

RichTextBox1.Text = Date
