i am trying to put a little text box on my page the will be like a 'news' section. i want to be able to highlight words and make them links to certain sections within the site. similiar to this textbox at on the right of the side. i can put the text box in the page but i cant get it to have links on it. any ideas

That is an IFrame with a normal html file as its contents.

Do a google on IFrame tutorials you'll get the idea

without being too rude....learn about Iframes and Frames and cross-borwser compatibility before you decide to use them....
otherwise your post sounds like
"Hey I bought the car and got it started...should I now roll down the hill to see if I can figure out this shifting-steering thing?"
No offense, but I think it is really your call

Frames are just what they their name promotes..."Limits,borders,barriers to free flow...."

Look into layers or through the link above...
All the best!
