Does anyone know the best way to connect to Terminal Server from a remote location? I'm using a VPN, but still can't connect to my server.

are you able to ping the server by name or IP when connected with the VPN?

What is your remote client's OS version? W2K, XP,..?

Peping

I can ping by IP but not name. I'm running Win2K Server on the client side.

and what happens if you try to open up the terminal server via it's IP address?

Try ipconfig /all and look and see if anything is strange on either side. Might be dns if you can't ping by name. Put the both machines in your hosts files on both machines just for jollies and see what happens. (I think bronto's onto it. Listen to him.) Glen A. Johnson

don't i have to be able to map to the Terminal Server to run the TSCLient Setup from my remote machine?

that's one way of getting it, yes. But you can map to the IP address as well until you fix your DNS settings on your VPN dialer. Just say "net use * \\IP-ADDRESS\C$"

Hi, I assume you have the problem to configure the TS client, if you have windows XP CD, you can install Remote Desktop COnnection into your W2K Server or Workstation.
the file name is MSRDPCLI.EXE, located in the XP CD.

i found that this software is work better than the old TS CLinet software, you can manage WXP and W2SVR, and have a nice interface.

Thanks! I like that Remote Desktop Connection. Do you have to install anything on the server that you're connecting to?

Question...once you install Terminal Services, if someone knows the IP of that box, can they get to it via TSClient? I know they have to have an account to log onto the domain, but is there a way to lock out from just getting to the box?

Users can only log on if they have a user account that is allowed to log on locally (or can intercept an account...). CitrixEngineer@yahoo.co.uk

This is going to sound stupid, but it happened to my former boss. He was setting up a new server, and couldn't get vnc to work. Since this was our first w2k server, he decided to use ts. After 2 weeks of not being able to connect his pc to the server in the backroom, he gave up and asked me to look at it. First thing I checked was vpn website. Turns out he didn't have the monitor resolution up high enough. I fixed that and went on to figure out ts. Turns out he was trying to connect to the new server in the back room from his desktop, but he forgot to install ts on the server. I installed it, could then use vnc or ts. So, is TS installed on the remote pc? (Again, I know it sounds stupid, but things happen.) Glen A. Johnson
