HI,

How much(%) redundant information is transmitted when a VPN communication is in progress?

Background:

I run a windows 2000 terminal services session over a dial up connection. The connection is made at circa 30Kbs. I do get satisfactory screen updating at this bit rate. However, using a laptop via a cell phone, the max speed seems to be about 9.6Kbs and the screen update rate is not satisfactory.

Using a Sierra AIRCARD on a laptop I believe I can get a 56Kbs connection to the internet. If I then used VPN to make the connection to the server, what usable bit rate would I get. A ballpark figure will do.

Thanks,

JohnH

It's kind of difficult to give exact figures. Depending onthe VPN protocol you use, the overheads vary. Another big factor affected VPN throughput is machine performance. An older machine will be noticeably slower transmitting data via a VPN.

Do you have Citrix Metaframe installed on your Terminal Server? Maybe NFuse would be a possiblity as a secure method of providing Terminal Services.

Hi Stiles, thanks for your reply.. I don't really know what Citrix Metaframe is.. Should I check it out?.. I am a limiyed bufget and I don't really want to get involved with a wedge of 3rd party software unless I have to.

JohnH..
