i have a server behind a router (netgear RO318) with a private ip address, i port forwarded port 3389 to the correct ip but when i try to connect through the internet it won't work, i can connect through terminal client on the desktop clients in the same subnet to the terminal server but not from the outside. it is configured wtih remote admin mode and i am the only one connecting. what do i need to check?? what did i do wrong?? thanks people.

Hi Inkadink,

A question for you, have you tried connecting using the IP address for the server. The Terminal Services Client program allows you to connect to a Terminal Server either by Name or IP address and then connect as the Adminsitrator or TS user account.

Try connecting via IP address, maybe the server might reslove via the IP address.

Another thought and I know this might be a wierd thought. In the Route table you should be able to unless you already have done so, make a route to the TS Server.

Upart from that I can't think of much else, I hope I can be of some help, please let me know how you go with it.

All the Best,

Techojunkie

yeah i can connect by the private ip address and also by the name, but only from inside the network. i really don't understand why u said to make a route with the routing table. i just did port forwarding shouldn't that work?
also i dont know if it makes a difference but i am trying to log on through the internet with a xp pro machine. i figured it wouldn't be a problem considering that it worked for me within the network..

one more thing.. do i need to activate the ts server to my knowledge with admin mode u don't need to have licenseing is this right?

would it be because my router is giving dhcp address's out and the Terminal Server has a static ip. it is on the same subnet though??
