Guys and gals

I have a problem with a 2003 box TS licensing server.....

DC is 2000 box
2003 member server

installation and activation of 2003 TS license server went well, no problems noted. however.....

When users connect to the server i had a look at the license server in TS, for some reason it was not connected, i connected it but the TS CALS were not being issued.

Not sure what steps to take, the only problem that i can forsee is the fact that i have not registered my copy of 2003 standard edition server.....

any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

At the moment the 2kDC is the license server for the 2k CALS however the 2k3 box is the TS license server. How can i specify where to look for licenses. I cant find any info on this subject.

P.S thanks in advance

The link I gave you above tells you how to specify a specific license server.

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

Mark

Firstly thanks for taking the time to answer my question, it does help having some guidance.

Do I insert this key in the 2k box or into the 2k3 box, after reading the article i was not sure of which one recieved the registry addition.

D i need to move the license server completley from the 2k box to the 2k3 box. The 2k3 box is only running as a member server will this make any difference.

Again thanks in advance.

David

You would do this registry change on the Terminal Server and have it point to where ever you have installed the TS CALs (like on itself). No need to touch your other server.

To give a rough description of the TS Login process:

The normal process is a client logs on to the TS box. The TS Box then looks to its license server (usually a DC) and gets the client a license which is passed back to the client machine.

With this registry change, the TS Box gets the client request and looks locally for the CAL and issues it.

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

Okay Mark,

thanks for the reply, however, my TS Box for some reason keeps on making me reregister the server. Will this registry fix stop this happening.

Before i go messing with the registry i have to be sure that iam doing the right thing, I know that you can only aid so much.

Have you had to do this before....

Cheers
David

Hi chaps,

I have followed the steps in the document linked here, but step 7 is a bit obscure... it says:

Name the new key "ServerName" where ServerName is the NetBIOS name of the license server that you want to use, and then press ENTER.
Note The only data value required in this registry key is one of the following:
* The NetBIOS Name of the server
* The fully-qualified domain name (FQDN) of the server
* The IP Address of the server

However, in the new Key, I am guessing it should be a String value? SHould the name of the value be the IP address, or the DATA value be the IP address? If the data value, then what should the name of the data value be???

Will

For example:

Should it be:
HKLM\...\myServer\10.10.10.10 (with a blank data value)

or

HKLM\...\myServer\IPAdress (with data value 10.10.10.10)

??

Will

Will,
Name the new key "ServerName" where ServerName : the servername is the computername of the machine that is issuing the TS licenses of the machine not the domain name or you could use the ip address of the machine.

Hi Enigma... thanks for your reply, but you misunderstand me.

I have named the new Key "myServerName" (obviously left out real name of my server), and next I am supposed to add a "data value" as stated here:

"Note The only data value required in this registry key is one of the following:"

But when I click New to add a data value, I get String Value, Binary, etc... and there are two things needed:
a name for the data value
The data value itself.

Which part of the two above is the IP addres as in the following three choices?
* The NetBIOS Name of the server
* The fully-qualified domain name (FQDN) of the server
* The IP Address of the server

If you have done this (tried it) already, then you must know the answer...

Will

Ooops sorry about that. I think this link will help you answer the question you are looking for : Create a username and password and it is free. Go into chapter 1. Once chapter 1 comes up scroll down to License Server Discovery Topic read that and look at fig 1.1. If you look at the fig mentioned above, SVR1 is replaced by myServername and the data value is left empty on the right pane. Hope that helps you out if it works please let me know thanks Will Sorry about misunderstanding you.

Hi Enigma, although I didn't download the book, I figured out what to do with the "data value" after some thought. I just named the key with the name of my server, and left the key empty.
However, I can now, as a result, access the Termernal Server with the config set to Per User! This is good news! ;)
Problem is, that still my 10 User CALs remain at a status of 0 licenses issued, but my temporary Per Device licenses show 6 issued, to me included...
Is this because of the un-managed nature of W2003 TS Licensing? I guess I need confirmation, because by May 6th if it is still not right, then the users will not be able to access... and I'll be fired for being a nincompoop!

:)

When your temp IDs expire you should get issued a permanent license now.

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

Actually in my case, I don't think that's the case. The temp ids are Per Device, but my permanent licences are Per User. See my post about this in the forum.

Will X-)

WillShakespeare (love the name by the way),

When your temp ID expires, your PC should at that point go out looking for a new license and at that point the License Server should kick in and issue whatever it has available.

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

Will you do not have to download the book. It opens in either html or pdf format.
Mark, If I change the clock manually to 120 days will that work as a test?

LOL! I started using it on TechRepublic, and now use it on all my forums, etc. though on 2 occasions I wasn't allowed because it was already used... :(

I wonder if you are confusing my 2003 issue with 2000? The Per User and Per Device licences are different, and when in Per User mode, the Per Device licences are ignored, completely.
In 2000 TS, there is only one type of licence (Per Device), and so in this case, I'd imagine you are quite correct.

The 2003 server licensing is quite confusing though, hence my Tip post. Especially as Per User licences aren't even managed, so when they are taken, the number of licence does not decrement, and the issued column does not increment.

Anyway, as per your post, this means my PC won't go out at all looking for a new license as it is my User account linked to the license. So, if I go to another machine and log into the TS, a new license isn't generated, rather my already existing one is used.

Make sense?

Your friend,

Will

Enigma256, I've never tried to expire a license early, but I imagine if you set both the server and workstation clocks ahead that should force the issue, at least in theory.

Will,
<transgression> I'm a huge Shakespear fan. Have quotes from a number of plays stuck in my head. At one point I had about 85% of MacBeth memorized. Got a parking ticket once in NY and made $85 on the street quoting plays people named to help pay for the ticket. What a riot. </transgression>

Yes, you are right I was getting your issues mixed up because of your mixed Win2k and Win2K3 environment. To your question, yes that makes sence. The isea of Per User licensing is that one use can have multiple devices such as Desktop, Laptop and a PIM like an iPaq and only consume one license.

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

Regards,

Mark

MarkdMac, Well I changed the date on the TS client to like 5 months ahead, it did not get a license from the TS License Server at all.
