Does anyone know what type of license is issued from a win 2000 sp4 terminal server for a new device connecting? I know win 2000 and xp prof have built in.. The question is for allocation? Say I have an xp home edition machine log-in to the terminal server. Will terminal server issue a permanent or temporary license for the first 90 days given a permanent license is available. I understand even permanent licenses are only for 90 days… Or will the server issue a temporary on the front end for 90 days, at the end of this period the server then upgrade to a valid permanent license?? What is this xp home edition going to consume on the front end?

Thanks

You are correct, Win2K and XP Pro come with builtin TS licenses. When a device running other O/S (Win9x, NT4.0, XP Home) connects if there are no available licenses on the licensing server a temp is given. The temp will last 90 days at which time a permenant license must be given.
If there is licenses available on the Lic server, a permenant license is given... If the licensing server is pre Win2k SP3- the license is permenant and the machine takes that license to the grave- a reformat of hdd will even cause this. At this point MS must be called to reissue the license. Now, if the licensing server is post sp3 the licensing hotfix will be applied- this insures that a permenant license expires before 90 days and goes back to a license pool at which time they are given out on a 1st come 1st serve basis- this fixed the issue where a decommissioned or crashed PC TS license is gone for good.
Check out-

I believe that ts comes with 2 concurrant licenses, which means you can have up to 2 people logged in at the same time.
