Temporary Network

I need to create a temporary network for a training session. The network will:

- have approx 16 connections (I have a 16 port switch available)
- Internet access not needed
- Host SQL Server 2000 Enterprise
- Have Win2K Server installed

Please - does anyone have any suggestions for accomplishing this network? What considerations need to be made? How does Windows need to be configured? Etc.

As stated, this is temporary (three days).

you can use an older desktop pc to build the w2k server, lay on the sql server, and plug it into the switch.

either give the w2k server a static ip address i.e. 10.10.20.1 and each client the next available node 10.10.20.2, 10.10.20.3, ect... or go for the gusto and install dhcp server on the w2k server. then it will be plug and play for your clients.

depending on your security needs, active directory may not be needed for this network. just a stand alone server.

Thank you for the information.

No true security is going to be needed. The class will have some provided client machines and some others will bring their own machine - all mostly laptops. The server will only have SQL Server with a couple of product-specific databases and the data is sample data with no value.

The clients will be connecting to SQL server and that will be the only thing they need to connect to.

I see you mention AD, but won't that be needed for connections to SQL Server?

what version of sql sever are you installing?

i would install the DHCP server on your w2k server, so clients can just patch-in. Give your w2k server a static address. AD probably won't be necessary, cause you would have to create user accounts for all the users, ect... if the database's can be accessed by everyone, i believe it will work. set it up and test it out before diving into the domain setup..

maybe shoot a question to the sql board about the setup.

OK - Got the server running, DHCP configured, can connect to each machine, but cannot get SQL Server to connect via enterprise manager or through ODBC. Any thoughts?
