Hello,

When i try to connect to my mailserver with a telnet smtp session from outside the LAN. The server returns this garbled up shit:
--------------------------------------------------
220 ************************************************************0*2******2************************200********0***0200
--------------------------------------------------

From inside the LAN it returns a normal message:
--------------------------------------------------
220 aarde.buyonline.nl Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 5.0.2195.5329 ready at Thu, 17 Jul 2003 14:37:00 +0200
--------------------------------------------------

Have anyone of you guys seen this before and can tell me whats wrong?

I think this is the cause for a lot of our mail being rejected by other domains.

Thanx in advance for your help
rgds,
Rene

Haven't seen it before.

Since it works inside the LAN but not outside, the first place I would look is the Firewall/Router. Do you have port forwarding abilities? Is port 25 closed or filtered? Can you get to any other service from outside the LAN?

Just curious..... is your mail server an open relay? Which ports are open on your server? Can you account for them all?

I found out it was a firewall issue indeed.

"fixup protocol smtp 25" was the culprit.

It's a feature of the firewall to allow only a few smtp commands to go through.

So removing that gave me a normal message.
