Telephone rings continuously even after off hook

I have a ringing problem in one of my remote units on a Meridian Nortel switch option 81. I‘ve received complaints from customers about telephones ringing continually even after going off hook.

My initial though was: a bad hook switch but the hook is good (not sticky or stuck) and sets have voice mail which would stop the after the forth ring and go to voice mail.

I changed the ring generator card.

I always arrive after the fact when the customer has unplugged the set.

I’ve been told it is not the regular ring they usually hear but a faster ring even after going off hook.

This oddity occurs on only one of my remote units: on different loops, cards as well as on both digital and analog sets. It happens randomly and doesn’t return to the same sets with no particular time of the day.

Can someone please help.

Thank you

You say this is a "remote". Is it a Remote Carrier or what? Are you using fiber or copper to feed it? What type of set are you using? It still sounds like a switch hook problem. More info please.

I dont think it would be a hookswitch issue if more than 1 phone is involved, plus like he stated, voicemail would have gotten the call after 4 rings if they are set up correctly.

The remote unit has four shelfs and is feed fiber from the main switch.

What type of phone? If this is a 2616 or similar type, could the user be hitting the program key and entering the right string of options to adjust the volume on the ringer?

he stated it was multiple sets and also analog and digital are affected

Reset (power cycle) the remote end and check for fiber issues at the connection points.

While cycling your system is not such a bad thing (and about the easiest and most telling), my thoughts are that you should also be considering the power / grounding if the restart does not work.

Although theres not a lot you get direct access to, 48V should be easy (its on all the analogs).

Maybe listen for noise over the supplies? Any high strength radiation sources? Could be anything weird and wacky that way.

DFK has a good eye. Take that advise!

Yes,we have 2008/2616 sets in use, our customers are not hitting the program key for options on volume/ringer.

My supervisor interviewed one customer who said he when off hook, the set was still ringing, he had dial tone and made a call, hang up the handset and tne set was still ringing.

I'm serious - I know this sound un real but we are getting sporatic reports (it never occurs on twice on the same set) from different facilities with simular accounts, the only thing in common is the same remote.

I don't think the fiber between the main switch and remote is an issue since 99% of the sets and equipment work fine.

Our facilities operates 24/7, powering down this remote would be a last resort since there arn't enought resources to back feed service to are customers if the remote doesn't return to live.

Guys, I appriciate all your input - at this point every bit helps, I'm trying to remedy this reoccuring problem at my level.

I'm not a grounding expect so one may be requested to do full testing.

Can anyone think of a common card which may generate ringing action.

Any and all replys are apreciated.

Thanks again.

I have had this same issue happen with digital Centrex M5312 and M5316 phones when the loop was too short. I padded the pairs by adding resistance and the problem went away. I don't know whether this will parallel your problem, but it may give thought.

I had this happen once on a 61c. After using nearly my entire stock of spares - everything from ring generators to line cards, I finally replaced the PE power supply and I still haven't had any recurrences after nearly a year. Hope this don't jinx me.
