telephone calls using PCs?

I have always dreamt of using the telephone with a PC.
Is there such software that keeps my phone book, and with
a click I can make the call, and if busy on the other side,
retry after every two minutes or so, and I can use the
headset and mic instead of holding my handset and
operate my computer while I am trying to communicate
with others on the line at the same time. If there is
any incoming calls, I will be notify just like those ICQ
things or incoming email notification. Of course
I am not talking about investing hundreds of dollars
buying those answering machines (PCI cards in PCs)

You might try a search for a product "Asher". Obsolete and worked under 3.1 I think. But it would allow two phones/modems and access to files during use. Ed Fair

My IBM Aptiva A-40 was set up to wake up on ring. The only problem is it would take forever to wake up and boot, so you had to leave it on if you wanted to use the answering machine. Inside Windows there is an auto dialer program. You would still have to have a good microphone or headset to be able to talk or hear. I think Actiontech makes modems called call waiting modems that can be configured as answering machines. They are designed to ring when you are online to let you know you are getting a phone call. I don't recall what the Aptiva software was called. I am shure it was made by a third party. I am thinking Phoenix or something like that. It had an autodialer and a way to store phone numbers/address book. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.
