I'm logged into my XP Prof PC as local administrator.

The TCP/IP Properties button is disabled. How to re-enable? It's hard to diagnose network connectivity issues when we can't even get into the IP Properties!!

cheers

Open network properties right click on your network adapter card click install and select tcp/ip this should get you going.

The NIC is already installed.

I can ping 127.0.0.1 OK also.

Are all the items in the LAN Properties inaccessible to you or just the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)? I suppose that box is checked?
