When Shuting down I get a Error saying TaskMON error. Anyone have any suggestions on this error?

You need to post the Exact error message verbatim and not paraphrase! Do an updated virus scan is one troubleshooter. What anti-virus are you using? Are you using a firewall like free Zone Alarm or Sygate? You should use the firewall. It just may need uninstalled/re-installed. Emachines, Celeron 600, 256 Mb RAM, 10 Gb HDD, ADSL.

Try this. Click start--run--type msconfig--ok--open the startup tab and uncheck 'task monitor' then ok out and restart. Does it still error the next time you shut down? There's no problem with unchecking task monitor. In my opinion it's a useless program. Here's Microsoft's description of it if you don't know what it is:

"The TASK MONITOR tool included with Windows 98 records the disk access patterns of programs when they are started and stores this information in log files in the Applog folder. (c:\windows\applog) Task Monitor also records the number of times you use a program. Disk Defragmenter uses this information to optimize your hard disk so that programs you use frequently are loaded faster."

I've had TM unchecked for a couple years and i've seen no difference in the loading speed of programs. That's why i think it's useless. If you uncheck it then also do this. Open defrag and click the settings button then uncheck "rearrange files so programs start faster" or whatever it says then click ok and exit. You want that option unchecked if you uncheck TM in msconfig.

But your error may be caused by corrupt files in the applog folder. TM creates those files. Open the applog folder and delete everything in it then see if the error goes away. If they won't delete then you can delete them from safe mode. Try that if you prefer to have task monitor running.

Thank You, Sorry I don't have the error code. The problem showed up when I fix my parents machine. The problem did occur after installing Mcafree Anti-virus. I will try these hints.

Uninstall Mcaffee (mcCheapie) the weakest AV on the market, immediately in add/remove programs; restast your computer after uninstall then go to and get free AVG Anti-virus.

Ensure you have free Zone Alarm or Sygate personal firewall installed. Emachines, Celeron 600, 256 Mb RAM, 10 Gb HDD, ADSL.
