Nick

Grenage > Thanks for the site, will try it out.

Dan > Pressing the Win key only works as the start button.

If Taskbarplus fails, you could have a go with System Restore.

linney > Thx, yes I have kept that as a last resort as I have a long and detailed project that was created just before the problem which I may not get it back, not sure.
Nick

During a restore operation System Restore will always create an "Undo" option in case you lost anything valuable. It will not touch your data, it is only interested in System files and programs.

Monitored File Extensions.

The following is a list of monitored file extensions. Files with these extensions are monitored by System Restore.

linney > I really messed up this time; in the process I accidently deleted one of the users from the control panel which in turn just about cleaned out all the documents and folder contents on the desk top; would you be aware of any program that could restore the deleted user or even the documents; in the documents and settings I can see a couple of administrator and HP administrator folders but they are all empty, Thx

GetDataBack for NTFS is a good bit of software for recovering lost data. It's not free, but it's not pricey.

Recovery diminishes with computer usage, and it is not a 100% reliable exercise. There are professional companies that charge mega bucks to recover data, the more common folk among us rely on these type of programs.

Plenty of other recovery software listed here.

"GetDataBack" has often (but not always) helped out in these situations.

When you deleted the user, did you get offered (and select) the option to save the user's files on the Desktop?

A depressing story, the only positive to come out of it may be the appreciation of a good backup regime as an antidote for future adventures.

Are any of these folders you mention, the missing user, or are they other users? When you say they are empty, are you able to open them, or are you just relying on the information displayed as you mouse over them. Sometimes when you don't create a username, or maybe change the name, the actual users folders may be stored in an "Owner" folder rather than a folder with the username.

Grenage > Shall try it out, Thx

linney > No option to save data on the desktop was offered.
The Administrator folders are numbered #1-#4 no user names as such, I am able to click and open the folders but no data.

"When you choose to delete a user account in the User Accounts tool in Control Panel, you receive the following prompt:

Do you want to keep User's files?

Before you delete User's account, Windows can automatically save the contents of User's desktop and My Documents folder to a new folder called User on your desktop. However, Windows cannot save User's e-mail messages, Internet favorites, and other settings".

"I am able to click and open the folders but no data", if you mean you can't open data inside see these MSKB, if you mean there is nothing inside the folders then ignore them.

linney, Grenage > GetDataBack and also PcInspector seems to be good recovery programs but unfortunately it did not work in my case, linney those were some nice and informative sites; this will be my sunny weekend choir, to reinstall all the lost data from my backups (pat myself on the back for the backups)
