taskbar "ghosts"

I am having a problem with two computers. One is an IBM X40 Ultraportable laptop. The other is a 400MHz Celeron tower. Each of these is having a very similar problem with the XP Pro taskbar. When they startup they are getting what I call "ghost" programs running in the taskbar. The tower is gettting a "Progress Information" ghost and the other is getting a blank (no text) safehouse ghost. I have checked the msconfig, regedit (current machine.... run) and all the different startup locations/folders. Any suggestions would be helpful.
