Using Win 98 SE, suddenly the system is not remembering my taskbar settings once I restart, specifically "Auto Hide" and "Show small icons in start menu". It does remember the "Always on top" and the fact that "Show Clock" is NOT checked. No other problems with the system, no new software or hardware installed, no changes to system settings of any kind.
Any ideas? All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

Windows only seems to remember those sort of things when it has shutdown properly, if there is any problem with the shutdown it reverts to what you had.

Shutdown is normal. As I say the system is not displaying any problems at all apart from this, which is more of a nuisance than a problem, but I would like to fix it if only for my own satisfaction. All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

Try importing the below Registry key. It is from my Win98 box with the Taskbar set to autohide and small Start menu items.

------Copy from here-------------
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StuckRects]
"Settings"=hex:28,00,00,00,ff,ff,ff,ff,02,00,00,00,03,00,00,00,3e,00,00,00,1e, 00,00,00,fe,ff,ff,ff,e4,02,00,00,02,04,00,00,02,03,00,00

-------To here------------------

Paste it into Notepad and save it as TASKBAR.REG

You can then double click it and the settings will be importing into your registry.
