Wierd issue, my taskbar disappears ocasionally. I'll reboot, and it's back, then gone again. I set the settings in Control Panel->Taskbar app, but problem still persists

This is very often a consequence of malware.
Please see faq608-4650 for a discussion.

Hi,
Try this( if you have not already):
Right-click on the taskbar, select properties and uncheck 'auto-hide'.

Also be sure the 'Lock the Taskbar' option is selected..

I have to agree with bcastner
I have seen a sudden influx of this type of malware and virus's (for some reason these two go hand in hand).
These are extremely difficult to remove. There does seem to be a pattern though.
On about four different machines I have repaired. I have seen the Aurora malware. Though Aurora is not the main cause of the lost taskbar. I believe the Aurora malware opens the door for the real bad boys to get into your system bypassing the Microsoft firewalls and if Norton is installed disabling it.

Does your Search function still work?
Do you lose the Cut & Paste, Drag & Drop functions?

The only way I have been able to restore normal windows functions is repair/reinstall and run a good antivirus (not Norton) and follow Bcastner’s links.

I have a small mom & pop business repairing computers and the sudden boon of business has been all related to the above.
As a note. For some reason most of the computers coming in are on Dial-Up

Thanks for the thoughts.

my machine is XP home edition, high-speed DSL. I'll patch the malware, and let you guys know what came of it. Thanks again
