I have an IBM A series notebook running win2k pro with all current updates. for some strange reason my task manager has lost all 3 tabs (Applications,Processes,Performance) as well as the file menu. any ideas why this would happen and how can I get it to return to normal?

I had this occur to a user as well. I narrowed it down to being a screensaver/systray utility called "Deskflag".
It's a nasty bugger since it is designed to bleed through windows. Once I removed it, the problem was fixed.

However - before doing that I was able to make the top reappear by "messing around" with the missing top-portion. (nice formal explanation, eh?)
;)

Panderson is right - I either double-clicked RIGHT on the border of it, or maybe even dragged up from that topmost line, and the header came back. I then removed the offending program once i was sure the program was not corrupt. If it's not the Deskflag program - i would suspect something similar causing it. It only happened once, so the potential causes are all new to me.

Hope that helps.
