Once I swithched log-on to clasic mode, then back again, after that task manager has not worked, WHY?

In what way does task manager not work? Does it give any errors, or just fail to run?

How are you trying to run it? Possible ways to launch it are:
Start | Run type taskmgr
Right-click task bar, choose Task Manager
Ctrl-Shift-Esc
Ctrl-Alt-Del

Another possibility to look into:

There are some Trojan or Virii (Viruses?) out there do inhibit the Taskmanager from starting...

So I would suggest you do a full sweep with an AntiVirus Program and two or more AntiMalware Applications, such as Ewido, SpyBot S&D, SpySweeper, SuperAntiSpyware, etc... Benefit if this is not the case, at least your PC is clean afterwards...

I tried to get it by all the means, but nothing. Except whan I ran it from start-run, then it said 'File in use'?? Also system restore won't restore it at all now?? Before I used system restore but I nedded some software that wasn't there so put ib back to normal. Also my antivirus says my Pc's clean.

Can you open other tools like RegEdit and MsConfig?

One's Anti Virus is only as good as its current definitions that is why a second opinion is always worthwhile. Anti Virus scanners tend to concentrate on virus infections and may miss other forms of malware, this is why a layered form of protection is desirable.

Try the free version of "Ewido"

Windows Defender

You may get System Restore working if you try it from Safe Mode. Incidentally how is Task Manager in Safe Mode, or in Normal Mode as another user?

Also check these.

Does Taskmgr.exe exist in the Windows/System32 folder? You may have to get another version from the CD or elsewhere.

Some general things to try.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If the problems begin to mount and increase, you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
