Normally we backup to tape with:

tar -cvfp/dev/rmt0 /abc

Can I:

tar -cvfp/filesystemtostoredata /abc

I just want to write to disk instead of tape.

Almost, but give the tar file a name within the filesystem, ie

/filesystemtostore/abc.tar

HTH.

Or more precisely according to your example:

tar -cvfp/filesystemtostoredata/abc.tar /abc
