I have a single SDLT tape drive along with 2 DLT tape drives. The SDLT and the 2 DLT drives are seen as 2 seperate devices. I have 290GB of data that needs to be backed up on Fridays, and average about 6 during the week. What is the best way to do this?

Right now I split the data into 2 groups, 145GB a piece. I do a complete backup of one group one friday, next group next friday. And have all incrementals going to DLT tapes. This is split up into 4 jobs. Please let me know if there is an easier way. I'm concerned about doing a restore because the full backup is on one tape and the incremental is on another tape.

Hi,
Since your SDLT and the 2 DLT's are not the same you can not group them together. What is the capacity on your SDLT and your DLT's?

Regarding the setup of you jobs;
I do understand that you are limited with your hardware to do changes but it all seems very complicated. Four different jobs, incremental on the DLT tapes and so on.
It's really hard to say that you should do like this or like that in order to improve your situation. Maybe you can consolidate it to two jobs only? Incremental Mon-Thu and full on Fri on both devices for example.

The restore concern is fully understandable. I would also be very concerned with that kind of setup...

I hope you find this post helpful.

Regards,
GSC

I really dont have any changes that I can see with the hardware. As far as the jobs, I'm not sure what you me on both devices.
