All of the sudden, veritas started kicking the tape out part way through the backup. I checked the logs, and this is what I found:

Drive and media information from media mount:
Changer Name:
Drive Name: SEAGATE 1
Media Slot: 0
Media Cartridge Label: 4MM000003
Targeted Media Set Name: Media Set 1
The media provided to continue the backup already contains data
from one or more sets created during this operation.
The operation can not be continued

My tapes are not formatable, how do I fix this whithout getting new tapes?

Why would the tape all of the sudden be full when I'm overwriting essentially the same 30gb of data to a 20gb/40gb tape?

20/40gb tape. The rule of thumb is half the difference on compression. So 30 gigs is about the limit of the tape with compression. Some files may already be compressed.

You data is increasing so it needs another tape.

20 Gig native and up to 40 compressed.

If your getting 30gb now that is good.
