hi everyone,

After running, writing to the tape for 1 hour, the database backup job failed with 'SQLSTATE 01000 Message 3014 The step failed'

Another non-descriptive error message from Microsoft.

I looked in Books On Line - not much help.
Searched this forum - no hits.

How can I find out more about this error/condition ?

Thanks, John

Have you asked in forum962? That's the SQL server Admin forum, they might have a better answer.

Questions about posting. See faq183-874

Hmmm ... sounds like maybe your tape media has run out of space. Couple of questions ...

How large of a DB are you backing up?

Are you backing up just 1 DB or several. If so, how many and how large is each?

Are you appending to the media or are you INITing and Formating to remove all files on the media before your backup?

Has this job worked in the past?

Please post you backup command with the answers to the questions poised.

Thanks

J. Kusch

Another follow-up question would be ... what type of backup device are you using and then what is the media type?

Thanks

J. Kusch

"Has this job worked in the past?" No its a new job.

Only 1 DB, size is 20 GB and T Log is 200MB

New tape, first use - holds 160 GB

The db was in use... that may be a factor. the backup to tape usually runs in early am, but I wanted to watch/monitor this new job.

Step 1 backsup the db, with init - this step completed.
Step 2 appends (NOINIT) the trans log - it apparently failed

(I've not been backing up the t-log - living dangerously !)

I may have made a mistake in the trans log backup command

I'll resume this when I return to the office on Monday and will post the BACKUP LOG command.

Thanks for those suggestions and followups. John

ok....here's an update.

This job is working correctly.

I ran it this morning, before anyone was using the database. Steps 1 and 2 completed successfully.

Case closed :)

Thanks, John
