This sounds trivial except for this little tidbit:
The original owner of the public folder no longer works here and her account was removed (deleted) from the system. It is not obvious to us where we can actually go to remove this public folder. We actually just want to delete it because it is giving our real-time virus scanner a bit of a hiccup because it cannot access this public folder for scanning. All options like Properties etc are greyed out??
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm guessing we might have to go to the registry level to remove this?? Also we can go into "RAW" mode and we have an option of deleting the RAW direrctory but we are not familiar with what this might do?? Sorry to be so long winded.
Thanks in advance.

Er, I understood that only the owner can delete, try recreating the user with same name and delete but I suspect the security is a little smarter than that.

Use Exchange Admin, make yourself the owner, wait for replication and then delete the folder using Outlook.

Thanks for the replies folks but the problem with the two replies are as follows:
TheOtherKiwi - When users are assigned in exchange they have somewhat of a "identification key" which is what folders etc base the ownership upon, when the user is deleted the key is gone. Creating a new user with the same name will be issued a new "key".
JWilliams - Even using Exchange Admin you cannot take ownership of a folder. Our temporary solution was to create another folder in a different area with the exact name copy all the contents of the old folder to the new and get into "RAW" Exchange and delete the problem folder. Deleting is the only option we had.
Thanks for the replies.

I'm having the same problem, but when I delete it in raw mode, it's still there! When I try to look at its properties in raw mode now, it brings up an error message saying it cannot be found in the directory. But it's still visible everywhere, including Outlook. I can even go into the properties for it in Outlook! This didn't happen to you? Do I need to stop and restart the directory service for it to go away?

On the Exchange Admin you have to set the permissions page visible Tools|Options and if the view the properties for the public folder you will find a button on the first tab labelled 'Client Permissions...' Click on this and you get the same dialog box as you see for permissions from the client properties. And you can take ownership from here.
