OK, i took the R6 class, which was ok.. BUT, it didn't answer a few questions. If you have an existing T1 for a comp network, what appropriations need to be done by the LEC? Assuming they have a CSD/Dsu and router on the circuit, how and what do you plug into the ACS t1 card? Is there an in and out on the card? Do you need a new csu???

Have a customer wanting a bid on upgrading an acs to R6 and a t1 card for DID lines. I need to figure this out sooner or later

After watching this thread for 2 days, I decided to give my 2cents. The T1 card will go in the first slot of a 5 slot carrier. There is a singlr RJ-45 connector on the face which with a Cat-5 patch cord will plug directly into the T1 providers interface. The T1 card has a built in CSU.
All programming has to be done with PC administration. ACS-6.0 and admin can be downloaded from Avaya.

Clock type is loop
Framing is ESF
Line encoding is B8zs
Signal type is Robbed bit

If there is an existing T1, it will depend on whether it provides for Drop and Insert which breaks out the voice and Data.

Since you will be useing a T1 for your lines (with DID) the price of a seperate T1 wont be that much, and easier to control.

With PC admin I set up all the programming on a mock system.
was rather simple.

I hope this helps some, I'M sure others at Tek-Tips will be able to give better advice....There are so sharp people that log in here and has a world of good advice.

Thank you. I understand the programming. But, what I am unsure of is.. IF there is an existing T, how do I get it to both, the data system and the KSU? Paradyne unit that has 1 line in and 2 lines out?

It really is not that difficult. Just like partitioning Voice & Data for a Legend or Magix.

My preference is always with a Paradyne 3150/3160/3164 as they have proven most reliable over the past 15 years or so.

Providing the T-1 is provisioned by the LEC or T-1 provider correctly for the installation, the ACS accepts 16 voice channels. The Paradyne just requires those channels to be split out via basic front panel programming identification, and the remaining 7 channels split for data with the 24th B channel - for data signaling back to the provider.

While some like the Magix 100DCD with CSU/DSU built in ... as a vendor and repair center, we have had many problems with them and also the 100INA. Not that they don't work well ... when they work, its just that a T-1 needs 99.999% reliable hardware. My preference is using the Magix 100D and the Paradyne 3150/3160/3164, or a comparably reliable Adtran etc.

The Partner ACS T-1 mod has the built in CSU, and really doesn't require the Paradyne if you are just provisioning 16 voice channels over your PRI T-1, but in most cases ... the cost of a full 24 channel T-1 isn't that much more and you get 448K of dedicated data. For areas that don't have broadband cable or DSL/ADSL etc, that isn't a bad setup.

Time will tell how reliable the ACS T-1 mod ends up being, and how many are actually put into use - kinda like the ACS 1600DSL mod. Word is that Avaya is soon to release a "multiple" carrier option for the single 5 slot carrier ACS system - somehow similar to the older Partner II dual carrier design. Should be interesting to see how they pull it off, and WHY ... as they have been wanting to push customers with over 45+ stations into a Magix system anyway. Maybe endusers do have a voice???

It would be educational to hear "real" installation stories from interconnects/vendors who have installed the ACS T-1 mod - successfully or not. Sorry for the long post ....

Very cool andrew thanks, do the Paradyne units you mention have an input for the T1 signal and then 2 outputs that go to the Ksu and the Data equipment?
If I heard right, didnt Avaya discontinue their DSL card?

Yes - The Paradyne 3150 - 3160 has t-1 input and either voice or voice/data split on the 316Xs. Very easy to configure and usually a real workhorse.

Haven't heard if Avaya discontinued the DSL mod, but there is limited VODSL infrastructure available nationally as I understand it. Avaya was betting on VODSL to take off in early 2000, but NADA!

Here in Chicago ther are no LEC's carrying the VOdsl. I hear a few guys install them in LA, but havent heard about the reliability part.
