Windows 2k pro goes through the boot process, the white bar finishes (with the F8 message) then the windows screen seems to finish and then the blue screen of death with some writing on the top I can't read because it instantly starts a reboot.

I have tried safe mode, and it does the same thing. It will boot off of a floppy, but I can not access the hard drive. I am replacing this system, but need to get all the data off the hard drive. Can I reload windows and not loose my data?? Or is there a way to get it to boot??? The system is old and I think if I can get it to run a chkdsk it might fire up for me - then I can suck all the files I need out over the LAN. Please help, the data is important and unfortunately the last backup is pretty old.

Yes, with Windows 2k you can reload your OS right over the top of the existing one. This will refresh system files in case they might be corrupt. Just make sure you don't delete the existing partition or format the drive and you should be fine.

You can do two things,
One, you said that you are getting a new system? when you get the new system, slave the drive that does not work to the new system and you will pull out the important data that you do not want to loose.
Two, you can boot the system with the os cd and run repair windows using the recovery console and when you get to the command prompt type chkdsk /r. It will runn for about 30 or more minutes. Type exit and let it boot to the hard drive.
