After useless attempts to repear disply problems by changing different drivers for garfic card, Xp when to rise system, display white screen and stop.Hear the sign as display is open, but nothing else.Try reset, but after Disc checking, stops.
With bootable CD SP1 try System Repear, on the end receive message done "successfully"-press Enter to restart.Check again Disc and on the end shows "System is being restarted....." and stops.Repeat evrything from the beguining but with same result.
Please if I must reinstall Xp and in the case is it posible to save Win 98 SE on other partition D:\ which works.

When starting the system into XP hit the F8 key early and often to enter Safe Mode.

Go to Device Manager, highlight the video adapter, Driver tab, and roll-back the driver.

Try as you suggest, but after enter in Safe mode and System liting ,stops witout display or opening Desktop.

Hmmm.

Do this:
The process looks more intimidating than it in fact is to do.

As you cannot access System Restore, the last alternative is an in-place repair/upgrade. You will not lose data or programs, but will lose Service Packs and Hotfixes. Try the registry repair first. And then, if the registry repair did not work:
But my hope is that the registry repair process will resolve your problem. The MS KB details on what the article above is suggesting you do:

Hi bcastner,
Thanks for your assistance. As you know I have on other partition Win 98 SE, so I enter through 98 SE in C:Windows\Repear and from this I copy and pass "System" and "Softwer" files into System 32\Config. folder and replace egzisting ones.
Restart XP and move further, but now display
"Windows Product Activation
A problem is preventing Windows from accurately checking the licence for this Computer.Error Code:0x80090019"
Then after opening my Icon after clicking on it put me of.
Is it possoble to solve this and how please.

I can point you as to the "why" it asks for product activation.
Boot to Safe Mode (hit the F8 key early and often to get this choice).

Click on the Activation Remindor icon on the task tray, and then choose the Phone Option. Call MS and they will issue you a new activation code without hassle.

My problem is I can't Log on in Safe Mode or in Normal Mode.As I alreadi describe you ,when i click on my Icon(or ASdministrator icon), immidiately put me OFF.
How to solve it?

If activation is the only issue, you should be able to boot into Safe Mode.

I want to make sure that you are copying the right folders when you do the registry repair. You most certainly do not want to copy c:\windows\repair if these are the registry hives from Win98.

You want to copy the XP partition versions of these files.
It might be drive letter D: or something else.

With bootable CD SP 1 repear the XP.NAV must be reinstalled ,but never mind.
Only two things now are problematic.
1/ There is a message on display from time to time theat System file doesn't work..... and
2/ All Windows Updates toghether wit SP 1 disappear.
Any advice please ?

You could again try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

to add to linney's thoughts, spend some time at the Windows Update site. There are some service packs and Hotfixes that will not survive the reinstall.

One note of caution: Do this incrementally. Do the Service Pack, then after a reboot do the Hotfixes. But please do service pack 1a.

You can speed the process amazingly by using the direct download of the "rollup" packages. Apply them in this order:

. XP rollup
. XP kernel rollup (after doing the above first)

Last but very imporant: go to the Windows Update site and apply all the Security Hotfixes.

Dowloading Service Pack 1a and some Hotfixes right now. After thet I'll follow your advices.
Thanks very much for your eforts and assistance. You are great.

Continuing to receve message on display
"Cannot conect to the file system". This message appear from time to time. Please advice how to fix it.

If you now have some access to your XP system see if you can check out the Event Viewer.

To get further information about the error look in your Event viewer.

Look in the System or Application folder. You can get to the Event Viewer via right click My Computer icon and select Manage.

Any errors logged in the Event Viewer can be expanded by double clicking on the error line.

Take any event error I.D. number and search for it on this site.

Also check any "Information" line that mentions "savedump" and you should find reference to "recovered from a bug check". This is the Stop Error that caused your problem.

You can also turn off "automatically restart after an error" so it will just halt at the fault and display the full Stop Error and blue screen.

Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties .
On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery .
Click to clear the Automatically restart check box under System failure , and then click OK . The error message on a blue screen should remain on the screen so you can record the error information.

If you can't get to it via XP we might be able to access it via your 98 system but we would still need a XP machine to read it.

Hi linney,
Yes now I can acces dirctly XP.Follow your advice and found some errors.Cheked System and Aplications folders.
Unfortunatelly my knowlage kevel is very low so this what I've seen can't help me much.
Can I run System Restore pointing to some erler point and using this will help to fix some of those errors.
Now my licence key is changed I don't know whether this fact will complcate the things more.
I try to find this specific error "Cannot connect to system files" but nothing.
Sorry for my ignorance , but beleive me I am doing my best.

Displey problems settled by changing Grafic card which was faulty.
I am sending you Event System report if you can help me.
This is a Worning from today:

I just followed linney's advice above and asked eventid.net about your message:

***** begin quoted passage ****

From a newsgroup post: "This message is harmless. It means an application asked to be notified when you are on or offline and then didn't respond when told."

From another post: "One cause for this message to appear is Messenger not being allowed to connect when you're online. The solution is to turn off Windows Messenger to start automatically with Windows and uncheck "Allow this program to run in the background" (under Windows Messenger Options/Preferences).

To Disable MSN Messenger Four things to do.:
Messenger, tools menu, Options uncheck the item for start at windows start.
Messenger, tools menu, Options uncheck the item for run in background.
OE, Tools menu, Options, uncheck run Messenger at startup.
Disable or don't open the 'contacts' pane in IE, and OE (OE, View menu, "customize toolbar", uncheck 'contacts bar')
-or-
(with XP Pro) Go to start/run, and type gpedit.msc open local computer policy/user configuration/administrative templates/ windows components/windows messenger doubleclick the 'do not allow windows messenger to be run' enable Note: This setting is available under both Computer Configuration and User Configuration. If both are present, the Computer Configuration version of this setting takes precedence.
