I have a CompaQ Presario. The other day I was trying to free up some disk space, so I uninstalled Microsoft Office XP. I quickly realized that OutLook Express is part of that package! I have hundreds of important email folders. Anyway, I am trying to do a system restore, however, there are no restore points in December, when I click on the arrow to go back to the previous month - Nothing happens! ANY SUGGESTIONS???????
Thanking you in advance!!

Outlook Express is NOT part of Microsoft Office and thus should NOT have been removed. OUTLOOK is part of MS Office - two different things. It would be bizarre to me if it was.

Do a search of your hard drive for the OE executable. It may still be there. Try launching it if it is there.
"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe"

Check to see if you data is still on the hard drive even if the Outlook Express is not.

Do a search for these files on your hard drive.
*.dbx choose to search everywhere and include hidden files.

Report back and we can help you if you still have data your data files. Make a backup copy of them. Typically they are located in a folder path such as this:

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Identities\{A85341F9-0683-40CE-AE30-FB7311AF7D3B}

Try reinstalling the application you removed. The information above is true, Outlook is a part of Office and Outlook Express is part of the Windows OS.

Sometimes an application will remove the installed Program Files but leave the data in your Documents and Settings or elsewhere. I would try reinstallation of Office XP first, then, if that does not work and the emails are critical, go to and download the trial version of GetDataBack, search for .ost and .pst files. Either way the app will need to be installed as that's what you would need to read the .ost or .pst files.

As for System Restore, if there are no restore points in December I'd say that app is disabled or malfunctioning. It should have created a restore point when you un-installed Office XP. Regardless neither is a hardware issue and would probably be more fruitful posted in forum779 .

So, I'm solving the wrong problem. He SAID Outlook Express but he meant Outlook. In that case, the search should be for *.PST files.

Sorry to solve the wrong problem, but wrong question gets the wrong answer. I would think your data would be on the system still.

goombawaho,

We STILL don't know if it's Outlook or OE...no updates from the OP. Outlook also uses *.OST files, especially Office 2003 with Exchange server, the "O" stands for "offline". I know that's not the case here, just bringing it up to pass the time while we wait for an update <tapping foot> [santa3]

I guess I assumed that you KNEW what was going on. So, I could still be right - woo hoo.

More people confuse OE & Outlook - it was dumb of Microsoft to have the names so similar.

Especially since the apps are so different. In any event, neither is considered PC Hardware [santa2]...and I hope we get to hear from the OP before too much longer.

It's pretty crappy when people don't come back and finish something after we type our little fingers off.

Well you know what they say about people with little fingers?

It was so much simpler when Microsoft had an email client called Exchange ... ;-)

They wear little gloves. [reindeer][santa3][xmastree]

Hey, if the OP abandoned his/her post, might as well have fun!
