Newbie to hardware so please go easy on me!

I'm trying to upgrade my memory from 1 gig to 2 gigs using KVR 333 MHZ PC2700. My computer already had 1 gig of this exact type of memory so both sticks match exactly. However, my computer is not recognizing the second stick at all and is showing only 1 gig of RAM still.

Its almost as if my computer just isn't recognizing the second memory even exists. My computer doesn't work if the DDR1 slot is empty but the DDR2 slot isn't. The new memory stick is fine however as I've placed it by itself in the first slot and it gets recognized just fine.

I've looked in the BIOS but I don't see anything obvious that would apply to the memory.

Any idea?

Actually, I've just noticed the small print on the box of the new stick and it says "Not Dual Channel Compatable". Does that mean it's not capable of being doubled up with another stick?

dual channel is where a motherboard runs ram at full speed of its mhz, it is not refering to using 2 sticks of ram so no worries on that part. Second off have you checked the motherboard manual to see its maximum capacity it can hold? If you know for sure that it can hold 2GB then try flashing the bios to the newest version. If you are unsure and dont know how to look post the motherboard name and model number on here and we will look for you.

Yeah, I'm not sure how to find out how much my motherboard can handle. Its a Microstar MS-7145. I hope thats enough information.

Socket 754

Supports 64-bit AMD® Athlon™ 64 and Sempron processor (Socket 754) • Supports up to 3700+ Athlon 64, or higher CPU

DDR 333/400, using two 184-pin DDR DIMMs. • Supports a maximum memory size up to 2GB

Looks like there are 2 184 pin mem sockets and 2GB is supported

Memory Issues
• Check memory timing in the bios
• Set memory timing by SPD for automatic timing settings
(Fig-a)
• If that doesn't help, set memory timing manually acording to memory specification listed on memory (Fig-b) or by contacting the manufacture.
• Test with a single stick of memory
• Test each piece of memory individually to verify memory is in good working condition
• Test each DIMM slot on the motherboard
• Re-seat the memory in the DIMM slot to verify that it is properly installed.

Did not find a manual and the above is minimal at best. Looking for manual to see if there is an enable switch/jumper for second mem slot. But as this is a fairly recent board there is most likely not. Look at the MSI link and try calling if this does not help.

A KVR 333 is not the same as a KVR 333...

ie. KVR333X64C25/1G, KVR333X72RC25/1G, KVR333X64SC25/1G, KVR333X64C25K2/1G, KVR333X72RC25/2G, KVR333X72C25/1G, or KVR333X64C25K2/2G...

so are they both the EXACT same type or do they vary just a tad in the numbers... as that does make a difference... has to do with timing and if they are registered or not...

also check if your BIOS is up to date... as this may have a fix for certain problems like those you are encountering...
RS482M-IL (MS-7145), RS482M-F (MS-7145), RS480M-IL (MS-7145)
should be at v. 1.4 ...

Previous answers sound pretty much on the money.
Obviously where does that leave you? I know compatibility is not their responsibility but any retailer worth his salt should take pitty and swap this module for a differant make he may charge you a small percentage for doing so.
Then it's fingers crossed that the replacement doesn't have similar issues of compatibility.
