system monitor board failed 61c

Has anyone ever had a system monitor board fail and trip the cabinet breaker ? this has been upgraged to a 61c system. Will I need to take the switch down to replace this board when it arrives? When the breaker tripped it took out about half of our phones. Tried several times to reset with no luck and then called our vendor, after some time they diagnosed the problem and we removed the board from the circuit and now all is well.

The system monitor board have that problem sometimes. It happens when the board is old and you try to unseat/reseat it. The problem is about the condenser on the board that doesn't still work properly due to the age of the board. In some case, you can reseat it in a out of power column then restart the column. In other case the board is ready for the trash box...

I had that problem few times before to understand. After that you take much more care of your upgrade procedure by handling few System monitor board with you...

it doesn't require a system down to replace, plug in the j5 and j6, then plug in the card... make sure the switch settings match.. bad switch settings will drop the switch

I had a problem with the sys monitor recently with an old option 51, it caused all the 500 sets to stop ringing.
Don't forget to disable tty0 (system monitor) before pulling the card or the switch will fall over

Just make sure your addressing/dip switches reflect the column its monitoring and make sure there are no bent pins.
Check DC connections through the column/shelfs especially on the Top Cap..Cheers!!

The sys monitor card to me is a fragile little china doll. I have had one, that just got bumped while running a cable in one of my 81's that burped, not fun at all especially in a collections call center. Since then I give that card extra care, like John mentioned, this is one card you want to double check you settings on before redeploying back into service

As john mentionned it's normally not necessary to turn off the column. But just try to do it with a 12 years old system monitor... On 10 boards, sure you will 2 to 3 that will make the column go to sleep. Really not funny, and be sure some boards may not restart at all (power supply for example)

I agree changing the monitor should not take down the columb. But that being said I would do it after hours just in case.

The main thing is to disable the system monitor before plugging the board in.
Go to LD 37
STAT TTY {to determine the System monitor port (usually 0)}
DIS TTY 0 (or what ever your system monitor TTY is)
install the board
connect all the cables
then:
ENL TTY 0
STAT XSM (this tests the system monitor)
