I am using Windows XP and Outlook Express 6. Since about two weeks ago, my system gets stuck whenever I use OE and my DSL is connected. I am OK working offline on OE. And I can access my mail via the Bellsouth website. But if my DSL connection is up at the same time as OE, everything suddenly slows to a crawl and then nothing responds. Initially I can select something, like ending the message receive window. It's very slow, then nothing. Sometimes the cursor can move, then it won't, then it will... CNTL-ALT-DEL is useless. I have to power down. I tried a System Restore to a date prior to the failure, but it didn't help. Also, this problem happened once before, about a month or two ago. It just went away after a day (???), but not this time.

Is your network connection setup to obtain an IP address automatically? It could be that your system is looking for a DHCP server and that is what is bringing your system to a crawl. joegz

Yes, it's set up that way, and it has been since May (when I got the computer and installed everything.) So it's been working until now, and I haven't (knowingly) changed anything. It just stopped working one evening (after working just fine all day.) The ISP tech says that's what it should be set at. I'm unclear whether you're telling me it SHOULD be automatic if it wasn't, or suggesting that maybe automatic could be the problem...

Well yes your ISP will tell you that but if you are using a PPPoE software you really need to (or rather should) make a change to the TCP/IP configuration so that your systems stops looking for a DHCP server.

I am not sure if this is what is causing your problem but you should eliminate that this is the issue.
